The summer slowdown is real. Here's how to drive through it.
If July felt slow, it wasn't your imagination — and it wasn't just your market. Our July 2026 Earnings Index measured the offer mix getting stingier: the median offer slipped about 5% per mile and the share of offers under $1 a mile hit 44%. Late summer does this most years. Here's why, and how to drive through it without donating your margin.
Why late summer sags
The usual seasonal mechanics push from both sides at once — demand thins while supply thickens:
- Routine demand pauses. Commutes, school runs, and office lunches — the weekday backbone — thin out as vacations peak.
- College markets empty. Campus towns lose their densest riders and late-night orderers until late August.
- More drivers online. Summer break puts seasonal drivers on the road right as everyday demand softens, diluting everyone's queue.
- The exception is leisure. Airports run at their busiest, tourist and beach markets surge, and event nights still pop.
Five ways to protect your hourly
Hold your floor harder, not softer. When the mix worsens, the temptation is to accept more just to stay busy. That's backwards — July's data showed offers above the floor still paid June rates. The slow-season mistake is filling dead time with money-losing miles.
Follow the season's demand. Shift blocks from weekday-commute hours toward weekend leisure, airport queues, and event let-outs. If you can only move one shift, move it to where summer actually spends — and check the day-of-week data while you're at it.
Run more than one app. Multi-apping smooths exactly the gaps a slow season creates — when one queue goes quiet, another usually hasn't.
Spend the dead time on the business. Slow weeks are when the oil change, the tire rotation, and the expense backlog get handled — and the Q3 estimated payment lands September 15, so bank it now instead of scrambling.
Watch your own two-week trend. A beach town's July looks nothing like a college town's. Your dashboard beats any national average — including ours.
The calendar bails you out: September reliably snaps demand back as school and commutes reload almost overnight. Position for it instead of burning out against August.
